01

Client context

A residential well-drilling contractor in the North Carolina Triangle needed to answer one question before every bid — how deep, and what will it cost — in a state with no usable public map of residential wells.

02

Operational problem

Depth is the biggest driver of a well’s price, and permitting rules differ by state, county, and district. That knowledge sat in scattered agency records and, in some states, handwritten construction forms.

03

What Field Elevate built

WellsMap USA — a national well-intelligence platform: a map of 14.6 million construction records across 49 states, spatial depth and yield estimates, and a verified 50-state permit playbook, wired into a quote-to-permit workflow for drillers.

04

How the system worked

Public agency records were collected, normalized, coordinate-cleaned, and aggregated. Depth is estimated from nearby real wells (distance-weighted, with a p10–p90 band — not model guesswork). Permits resolve to the true jurisdiction by geography.

05

Outcome

A live product at wellsmap.com: pin any US parcel for a free depth estimate, see the exact county or district permit (authority, fee, filing channel, who may legally file), build a quote, and route it through dual approval.

06

Why it mattered

It shows the full machine — large-scale public-record ingestion, spatial statistics, a statute-verified rules engine, a two-sided workflow, and honest handling of the gaps where a state simply has no data.

// WHAT THE PRODUCT PROVES

Real records, honest estimates, the right rule.

Built on real data

14.6M public construction records across 49 states — normalized, coordinate-cleaned, and aggregated. Where a state has no data, the product says so rather than inventing it.

Estimates, not guesswork

Depth and yield come from nearby real wells as distance-weighted statistics with a p10–p90 band. AI explains the numbers; it never invents them.

The right jurisdiction

Every US point resolves to its true permitting authority by geography — state agency, county health department, or water district — with fee, channel, and who may legally file.

// THE WORKFLOW

From a pin on the map to a filed permit.

The estimate is the front door. Behind it is a full operating flow that keeps a human in control at every gate — WellsMap prepares and tracks paperwork; the licensed driller, or the owner where the law requires, is always the submitter of record.

WellsMap does not issue permits. Government authorities do.

Depth estimate from real nearby wells

County / district permit resolved by geography

Quote with per-foot + contingency pricing

Registered drillers compared and selected

Dual approval before anything is filed

Have scattered public records that should be a product?

WellsMap started as one driller’s question and became a national data platform. Start with discovery so we can inspect the records, the rules, and the workflow around them.
